OH1RDS Weather station, location KP10BN Masku, SW Finland
NOTE: pictures and lastest changes found from my @oh1sa instagram account, PLS follow!
My weather station contains following components:
Weather station version 2 (under development/build)
- Under construction Feb-Mar/2019
- Replace WR89 due unreliable metering
- Under building: use robust 1-wire thermometer humidy sensors, read them by RPI
- Planning: use WMR89 wind speed and diretion plastic hardware, just replace electronics, start using wiring instead 433MHz ham band ISM radios
- Dedicate RPI for weather meter collection
- Simplify full station to: 2xRPI, Ethernet sw/gateway, VHF radio. All parts can easy replace
Weather station version 1 (CURRENT)
- Oregon Scientific Weather Station WMR89
- TP-Link router with MeteoBridge custom appliance application
- Raspberry Pi A+ single board computer with Rasbian and running APRX 2.9 APRS Gateway software
- RS-232 extension board for RPi to connect HAMDR radio
- Ham software modified Comarco MDR VHF radio as "HaMDR" .. 5W output in 144.800MHz
- Antenna 6m AGL Diamond X-50N
- Geiger counter board, data collected via rs232-usb wire with python daemon in RPi
WMR89 collect weather information. Metebridge loads data from WMR89. I'll try use RPi for this function with
Weewx linux/python application, but used python library was incompatible in RPI hardware when using CP210x
serial driver with non-standard serial speed that is used WMR89 (128000bps). Same software work ok with
normal PC hardware. This is known issue. And I like to build low power consumption solution, so I see that
using Meteobridge with cheap router hardware is cheap (about 100eur) and low power solution for my needs.
I use cron script to read weather data from MeteoBridge over http. Script create raw aprs packet and I use
APRX application to beacon it to radio interface (KISS) and also APRS-IS. Weather data is visible as
https://aprs.fi/weather/a/OH1RDS-1 and radiation data here
https://aprs.fi/weather/a/OH1RDS-2.
Future plans
- DONE: Install antenna to rooftop
- install wind speed and direction meter to new antenna tower
- DONE: Add radiation (geiger) counter to telemetry data
- Create ppt/pdf set of "how to build APRS weather station"
